A man taking a gold shot from the green

Setting up your own business is a dream for many people and right now there are some big business opportunities, with online sales increasing and ecommerce websites being one of the few industries to see any kind of benefit from the worldwide health pandemic.

People were already starting to spend more money online, but the recent events have amplified the number of people choosing to shop online. So, if you are thinking about starting up a golf website business, now could be the perfect time, especially with lots of people taking up golf as a safer, more socially distanced sport option.

If you are thinking about setting up a golf website, here are some top tips for success:

Review similar websites

In order to get an idea of how to structure your website, it is a good idea to do some research of websites that are similar to what you are looking to launch. If your website is going to be geared around selling golfing clothes and apparel, then golfposer.com is an example of a well designed website that makes purchasing products very easy.

Create a sitemap

Before you get to the point of building your website, you should spend some time to create a sitemap (and an XML sitemap once your site is built) to outline the page structure that you want for your website. Include important pages such as a contact page and think about how you want to structure every area of your website to maximise sales. It is also important to make sure that your website is as user-friendly as possible, with clear call to actions for buying products.

Prioritise website security

Cyber crime has been increasing rapidly over the last 12 months and if you are going to set up a website that takes card payments and personal data, you must make sure that your customers’ data is as well protected as possible. You will need to set up a secure payment process, as well as providing additional levels of security such as installing a SSL certificate and using a secure host. You also must create a privacy policy for your website and a cookie policy/banner to comply with data protection requirements.

Understand your target audience

A key aspect of effective marketing is to understand your target audience i.e. the people that will be visiting your website and buying your products. When you are creating your content for your website, you should be thinking about how best to communicate with your target audience, such as what information will they be looking for and what sort of language/tone to use.

Optimise social media

Use social media to build up a following of potential customers by creating content that will attract your target audience. This might be funny golf videos, expert technique tips or style trends for the year etc. Once you have built up lots of followers, you can use your social media accounts to direct customers to your website by advertising sales or offers that may be of interest to them. Providing useful and/or humorous content is the best way to expand your social media followers.

Use paid ads

As well as creating organic sales leads through social media, paying for ads on Google and Facebook can be a very effective way to bring higher volumes of visitors to your website and boost your sales.
