Summary
In our extensive research for this post, it became clear that many universities are now taking entrepreneurship seriously from a theoretical and practical standpoint. Most courses mix these two elements but there’s something for everyone in this list depending on your objective, whether you have an interest in entrepreneurship, want to develop intrapreneurial skills to working for someone else or too start and scale your own business.
Remember this list is a jumping off point, designed to give you an overview of what’s available when it comes to British entrepreneurship masters, before you make a decision to apply to a particular course or university, carry out further research and seek professional career or educational where possible.
Which course should you choose?
As you’ve know doubt realised, given the narrow field of study, many of these courses are similar. There are some with more obvious specialisations or secondary topics (i.e. Management, social Enterprise…) but the majority cover similar core topics, so how do you go about choosing. From our research in this post if you’re stuck, we’d suggest you look into several key areas detailed below to narrow down the best university and course options for you.
University reputation
First off look into the overall reputation of the university (age, history, public view…), then move towards points focused on your chosen field of study:
- Do they provide significant support for entrepreneurship? If so what support is available (workshops, office space…).
- What’s the level of academic prowess at the university in the field of entrepreneurship?
- Do they provide access to experienced mentors or Entrepreneur-In-Residences?
- How do employers regard the university business school or entrepreneurship programmes? (If your interest is more to become an intrapreneur in the workplace, this is off particular importance).
- What is the university/business school ranking in the Times or other guides?
- How are they ranked for the study of entrepreneurship? (sometimes this can be referred to as Enterprise).
Course structure/topics
- What are the core modules for the course, are they majority interesting to you? (Remember to look at year 2, if the course is 2 year – these details are often in an accordion)
- Is there flexibility in module selection and to what degree?
- What optional modules are available and are they of interest to you? (i.e. Business analytics and data analysis, entrepreneurship and market research….)
- Does the programme allow full-time or part-time study? If so over what periods.
- What is the background of the professors teaching the course?
Eligibility
Many of these courses and universities are highly competitive to get into, particularly at a master’s level, few things to watch out for:
- What is the minimum bachelors grade requirement for entry? (And do they accept international equivalents if you’re an international student)
- Do they accept work experience or qualification in lieu of bachelors degree qualifications (some do but typically on a case by case basis, in this instance professional experience/qualification alongside a cracking personal letter will be critical to your application).
- Beyond degree or professional qualification, do they look for extracurricular proof of an interest and commitment to the subject of entrepreneurship? (many do, particularly the highly competitive programmes where good grades alone are not usually enough to get you in).
Take your time
Most importantly take your time in researching and choosing the right course/university for you, this is a big decision that can affect you for years to come at a minimum.
On a final hopefully helpful note, Excel is a very useful place to summarise all this further research and whittle it down to the final choice’s course/university courses for you.
Disclaimer: The numbered list on this page is ordered from A-Z (by university name) and does not indicate in any way one university or course is better than another (the numbers are there to let you know where you are on the page).
