Founded in 2013, Airtame as a company has gone to raise more than $4.1 million from private angel investors and a massively successful and overfunded crowdfunding campaign. Now based between Copenhagen and San Francisco, the Airtame team have just released their second-generation product (Airtame 2). The product can be compared to Apple TV and Chromecast but differentiates itself by providing far more advanced functionality (including digital signage, app integrations, Kensington lock support and more).
Though anybody can purchase an Airtame device to wirelessly connect to screens, the product is primarily aimed at users in the commercial and educational markets (specifically designed for use in a workplace or classroom environment). Taking a look at the second generation product further, improved functionality and design offer a lot of benefits over the previous generation and current competition, particularly in regard to hardware, security and functionality.
Significant hardware upgrade
The hardware upgrade over the previous model is significant and massively adds to the performance and functionality of the Airtame 2. This starts with a new WIFI chip allowing a connection up to five times faster than the previous generation product. There is also four times the quantity of RAM (Random Access Memory) ensuring the device’s firmware (based on opensource Linux) has the memory to provide lighting fast interactions between the user, screens and devices. All this is on top of a doubling in wireless range to 20M, allowing you to connect from across a office room, conference theatre, classroom or even another close by building.
More secure
Taking a big leap forward in securing screens, the Airtame 2 provides pin code access when enabled meaning only the user or someone with the pin code can connect to a new screen; this is a simple but effective solution to ensuring only the authorised user can connect to or stream content to a display. There is also now support for any standard Kensington lock ignition key, meaning you can seriously upgrade your screen security and prevent any unauthorised use.
Advanced features
Alongside hardware and security upgrades, there are several new advanced features allowing you to do much more than with the previous generation product, this includes:
- Digital signage (enabling you to display slides, imagery, project boards and more while screens are not in use).
- Cloud management (access to a complete IT portal, letting your IT team remotely monitor and manage all Airtame 2 devices).
- Single window sharing (enabling you to choose which screen to share and even share an individual screen with others, while continuing to work on other screens).
Overall the 1st generation product provided a simple and effective way to for professionals, teachers and students to connect devices and streams. The 2nd generation product is a massive leap forward, providing far more advanced functionality coupled with a big increase in performance.
