Ensuring fair compensation
The salary and benefits of employees are critical aspects of a job. The Human Resource Department is responsible for ensuring fair compensation based on the employee’s role, performance, and any other legal requirements.
Compensation needs to be based on the current industry standards. HR can negotiate various group health insurance benefits and retirement plans that could assist the company employees.
Any raises or increases in other benefits will have to be discussed with the HR Department. It is vital that the Department ensures that they comply with the legal and cultural expectations.
Health and safety compliance and implementation
The health and safety of all employees should be at the top of HR’s to-do list. The Department needs to ensure that they comply with all legal safety measures. So if you need to wear a hard hat because you work on a construction site, then you must do so.
It is the job of the Human Resource Managers to strive towards creating the ideal work space that is healthy and safe for all employees. The health and safety of employees do not stop at the physical safety measures that are put into place.
HR Managers that are focused on the overall well-being of their employees will go above and beyond the normal safety measures.
Facilitation of employee and labour relations
Employees are protected through various labour acts. If there is a disagreement between the company and the employee, it will be HR’s responsibility to meet with the employee and their union to try and resolve the problem.
Mediating disagreements, considering harassment claims and abuses, and discussing employee rights all form part of this HR activity.
In essence, the HR Manager is the voice of the organisation. To de-escalate various challenging situations, it helps if this voice is a calm, reasonable voice.
With so many activities that form part of the Human Resource Department, it makes sense why they are so busy. Managing humans, their compensation, health and safety, and so much more is a difficult task.
